About

I have been extremely pleased with the new Harken roller furling system and the other rigging work that John has completed. In late June we were gone for 10 days in weather that included winds of 25 knots with much higher gusts for several days of sailing. Liberty's rig performed and the Harken system was easily furled and reefed by hand.

History of Great Island Boat Yard

Lindall Wallace & childrenThe Great Island Boat Yard, originally Wallace's Boat Yard, has been in operation for over 50 years. Lindall Wallace built over 100 wooden lobster boats and one sailboat at this site. Over time, people realized that Orr’s Cove was a pristine and well protected anchorage for the growing pleasure boat market. The Wallace family installed the first dock system and began marina and storage operations in the 1970's.

Frank and Ellen Kibbe purchased the boatyard in the late 1990’s. They brought extensive marine service experience from the boatyards that they had previously managed: Hinckley, Bass Harbor and North Haven. The addition of the first indoor storage building in 2003, combined with traditional quality workmanship, brought many fine boats to Great Island during this period.

Stephen and Stephanie Rowe left their jobs at GE to acquire the boatyard in 2005.  The Rowes have invested in new buildings, equipment, and training programs to bring the boatyard to yet another level of quality and capability. Great Island Boat Yard has grown to over twenty-five, year-round employees who care for and refit their fleet of 200 fine boats.
