Local Stewardship

Hip, hip, hooray! We’d like to give a big shout-out to members of the Harpswell Conservation Commission & Marine Resources Committee. This morning, a crew of volunteers worked to tidy up areas surrounding the Safe Harbor Great Island boat ramp. The team cleared fallen trees, flotsam and jetsam, and other accidental winter debris found around the ramp and below the high tide mark. Year round, Great Island works in cooperation with Harpswell clam diggers, providing easy “working waterfront” access to local harvesters. By giving back, these active members are ensuring responsible use of private facilities while also preserving valuable resources and relationships. The group volunteers regularly, throughout the town of Harpswell, stewarding 216-miles of coastline! They also give back to their community by hosting an annual dinner, serving clam chowder and fresh steamers – free to locals.
