Technician (Sailboat Rigger)

POSITION SUMMARY

Riggers effectively and efficiently install, maintain, repair, and replace sailboat rigging and sail systems. Must be mechanically inclined and experienced in use of basic hand tools, air tools and electric power tools. The Technician’s title may be specific to their trade and titled as such (Technician (Rigger), Technician (Electrical), Technician (Painter), Technician (Carpentry) etc.)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Unstep and step masts
  • Assemble and disassemble spars
  • Tune standing rigging
  • Connect and troubleshoot mast lights and wiring
  • Install booms, sails, running rigging
  • Prepare sailboats to safely sail
  • Splice lines, service winches and furling systems-both manual and electrical/hydraulic.
  • Service sailboat steering systems and deck hardware
  • Wax and clean spars
  • Inspect and estimate repairs
  • Must possess own tools
  • Availability to work overtime in order to meet deadlines

TECHNICAL AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
  • Sailing knowledge preferred
  • Hoisting/Crane Operator experience preferred
  • Previous experience preferred, willing to train
  • ABYC and/or manufacturer certifications preferred
  • Ability to ascend and descend a ladder
  • Must carry own tools
  • Familiarity with boats and nomenclature
  • Ability to lift 100 pounds
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions
  • Basic boat handling skills preferred
  • Ability to hang, move, twist, and climb with loads
  • Must be able to go aloft

Technician (Carpenter)

POSITION SUMMARY

The Technician (Carpenter) will be responsible for the layout, new construction and repair of interior joinery; the restoration of wooden boat framing / flooring / planking; and the maintenance & installation of teak decks.  Safe Harbor Great Island stores and maintains over 240 vessels, with over 150 inside heated buildings.  There is a large, well lit and well equipped carpentry shop on site.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ability to read and interpret drawings
  • Ability to plan, estimate, layout and complete carpentry projects
  • Conduct repair work and installation of custom interior boat joinery
  • Knowledge of wooden boat construction and repair techniques
  • Ability to operate tools, machines, and other equipment
  • Availability to work overtime in order to meet deadlines

TECHNICAL AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Basic math skills required, advanced math skills preferred

Diesel Technician

Position Summary

Diesel Technicians inspect, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair diesel engines and marine drive systems.  Safe Harbor Great Island is an authorized dealer and service center for Volo Penta, Volvo IPS, Cummins, Mercruiser Diesel, Yanmar and Westerbeke.   

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Inspect, troubleshoot maintain, and repair multiple OEM brands of diesel engines on boats of all kinds
  • Conduct all facets of engine repower projects
  • Basic knowledge of rigging to remove and install engines and transmissions
  • Utilize diagnostic equipment to diagnose issues and identify action plans
  • Access on line parts manuals across OEM brands to identify and source parts
  • Overall knowledge of marine drive systems including vibration troubleshooting and alignment
  • Must possess own tools
  • Availability to work overtime in order to meet deadlines

TECHNICAL AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Diesel Technical school training required
  • 5 years’ or greater experience required
  • ABYC and/or manufacturer certifications preferred

Technician (Painting Spray)

POSITION SUMMARY

Spray Technicians prepare & paint fiberglass, carbon fiber and metal surfaces. You will sand, prep and spray boat exteriors, spars and parts as well as complete paint repairs using both spray and brush application.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Surface preparation to include masking, sanding, and fairing
  • Spray application of primers, top coats and clear coats
  • Utilize hand and power tools including sanding blocks, long-boards, orbital sanders, etc.
  • Work within environmental requirements and best marina practices
  • Availability to work overtime in order to meet deadlines

TECHNICAL AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • 2-5 years’ of sanding and prep experience preferred
  • Wear a respirator and PPE for extended duration
  • No spray experience is required to start in this position
  • Ability to ascend and descend a ladder
  • Ability to work in confined spaces
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds

Yard Hand (Detailer)

POSITION SUMMARY

The Yard Operations (Detailer) specializes in the aesthetic maintenance of the many boats in our care. We currently have a crew of 2 members on our growing detail team. This is a full time year round position eligible for health and 401k benefits. Duties include cleaning and detailing boats both in our buildings and out on the water. Detailing includes buffing, waxing, polishing stainless steel, painting bottoms, and maintaining a clean and organized facility as needed. This is an entry level position that does not require previous yacht maintenance experience. However, it does require attention to detail and a strong ability to learn.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Washing, buffing, waxing and polishing, sanding
  • Painting bottoms
  • Engine bay detailing
  • Operate buffers, vacuums and other equipment to meet service expectations
  • Take pride in one’s work, maintain a high standard of ascetics for a discerning clientele
  • Available to work overtime when required

  • Previous boat yard experience, preferred but not necessary

Technician (Marine Varnisher)

POSTION SUMMARY

Paint and varnish vessel exteriors, interiors and components using brush application methods.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Hardware removal and re-installation on surfaces to be refinished.
  • Surface preparation to include stripping, sanding, masking, staining, priming and painting surfaces.
  • Apply coats of stain, varnish, or paints, as appropriate, to refinish and protect interior and exterior surfaces.
  • Knowledge of the application requirements for the products utilized.
  • Meet environmental requirements and best marina practices in acquisition, application, removal and disposal of paint, paint waste or residuals in accordance with OSHA requirement.
  • Availability to work overtime in order to meet deadlines.
  • Utilize hand and power tools.

TECHNICAL AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Attention to detail and cleanliness required.
  • 2-5 years’ experience preferred.
  • Previous experience with brush finish techniques preferred.
  • Ability to ascend and descend a ladder.
  • Ability to work in small spaces and from a kneeling position.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
